There used to be an Amphicar around when I was a kid - it belonged to people who lived on one of the islands on Windermere, just a few miles from my then home. I don't think the open bodywork was much use in the rainy Lake District though.
Just looked it up in 1965 Observers Book of Automobiles and it appears to have been based on a Triumph Herald, although made in Germany - so maybe James May knew something? Performance was a slightly more sedate 7.5mph on water - but it would do 75 on the tarmac.

Yes, remember the original Amphicars very well, in fact, there is still at least one in daily commuting service on the River Thames.
The owner lives somewhere in the Home Counties, and commutes every day to the City. Partly by road and partly by river!

The worst part is though if its registered as a car and gets tagged in the water or registered as a boat and pulled over on land.....Can you get a ticket for improper registration?
Imagine the idocracy of having to pay for it both ways LOL aww heII some politician probably just read this and went "hey thats a good idea.....make everyone have amphi-cars and we can double our income on registrations"

Dean - you're probably quite right about the politicians!!
There a few Amphicars around now that come to UK classic car shows. One back in the 60's crossed the channel, another is the Totnes motor museum in Devon, although needs a bit of bodywork from what I remember, and the restoration of one was featured on Scrapheap challenge a few years back, presented by "Madness" frontman, Suggs.

An Amphicar that needs a bit of bodywork is going to be scary, rust holes in your Triumph Herald are one thing - in this car it could give you a real sinking feeling
