Try and find a copy of John Betjeman's "Metro Land" film, made by the BBC.
The "suburbs" now are dreary and depressing places...neither Town nor Country, and I would not want to live in them at any price.

It's available on YouTube Sandie (but in 5 parts  ). It's on my favourites list.

I did not realise that, Tom, however I have a copy that I recorded ages ago onto VHS when it was shown on the BBC.
