Seeing RedThis photo is 100% real. It shows Sydney during the worst dust storm (millions of tons of surface soil were blown up from central Australia) in 70 years yesterday. Up in Queensland (1000km north) we all laughed at poor Sydney in the morning, but by lunchtime it had blown up the coast and engulfed us too. Everything was covered, fortunately we had closed all of the windows before going out in the morning.

A lot of the land has been deforested or suffered from severe drought resulting in no vegetation binding the soil. When the strong winds get up speed it just strips the topsoil away. Latest news is that the winds are picking up and may give us a second helping tomorrow. Glad I didn't wash the car today

Many years ago we had one down here in Victoria. I remember standing and watching this almost blanket-like wall of dust coming over us. For a while it was just like night-time, then back to normal leaving a film of dirt over everything.
Heard today with this latest one they reckon there was 5 million tonnes of dirt in the air!

I lived in Wichita, Kansas for awhile and we had dust storms there. It does not matter how well you cover the windows, it will come in anyway. No wonder Dorothy wanted to leave Kansas in the Wizard of Oz.
