Introduction from new member

I am Harry Munro, I live in Ayr, SW Scotland.

I am a mature (70+) late developer and recently I have started to collect model buses representative of those from the area around me. These include Western SMT, AA Services (Dodds), A1 Services, Stagecoach Western and a few others including some on the periphery such as West Coast Motors from Campbeltown and Oban, also now in Glasgow.

I have been intrigued by the code 3 models occasionally available including those from Mike Coorsh in London. I recently missed a Western SMT Bristol VRT prepared by him. A bit pricey but he is entitled to a premium for his labours. I would like to replicate one of his models and I have his permission as long as it is not for commercial purposes.

Before tackling the real thing I have been practising on old model cars, identifying the problems that I am likely to be faced with. As an aspiring amateur modeller, like all modellers, I am keen to ensure that I get everything just perfect and to this end I am seeking all the help and information I can muster.

I have also taken an interest in model railways, but only to the extent of building small, simple layouts for a children’s area in town. I am not a knowledgeable model train enthusiast as my layouts are not technically correct and I tend to use 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 engines with small four wheel carriages. I gather that these carriages may not be authentic and probably an invention of Hornby. However, they look good and in a few months I have managed to acquire rakes of  4-6 of each of the eight versions of this carriage I think are available. My first layout was a Christmas scene with circus, showground, bus garage, fire station, etc., all sitting on a blanket of snow. There were two moving trains on continuous loops which ran for several hours a day. Sidings held other trains. I am now working on a new layout, hopefully with three continuously moving trains this time. The children appear to get great fun from watching them.

Up until now I have been guddling away on my own and I am delighted to find this forum where there are so many experienced modellers with information that you are all willing to impart to assist others. I am already very grateful to a number of members who have, very quickly, responded to my first request and I look forward to experimenting with their advice.

I apologise if I have rambled on a bit but if there is any further information anyone would like (hardly!) I will be happy to provide it.

Thank you all for you time and assistance.
