Hello from Mike in Michigan USAHi and happy to find the Diecast Drive In.
I live in the Southeast corner of Michigan - near Detroit along the shoreline of Lake Erie. Nice to meet you all!
I grew up just south, in the Toledo Ohio area - home of The Jeep. Through the years my dad collected cars and being so close to the Motor City, he seemed to have a source for a lot of promo models which he accumulated each year - and...got me hooked on diecasts. along with my love of cars of all scales.
I am a broadcaster by profession, in radio and television for nearly 30 years, now with my own production company as a producer and talent.
So...I collected Corgi/Dinky toys since childhood (ok, let's just say, from about 1965 til my high school years). My dad had built a pretty impressive collection of mostly 1/25 plastic promos - annually - from 1940-something through the late 60s.
That was on top of his childhood collection of vintage diecasts and toys from the 20s. All are in incredibly good shape - display-case stored.
He died in the late 60s and these have been shelved in the basement of my parents house to this day.
Over the past couple of decades, other than keeping a close eye on the
collection, nothing has really been done as far as any major cleaning/restoration of anything per se.
They've been pretty much left alone in a couple of large showcases, though humidity over the years may have had some ill effects -so i'm kinda concerned about controlling their environment and preservation.
I'm at a point where I want to actively get these inventoried, documented and do whatever is appropriate to maintain them as best I can.
I'd like to catalogue them all in order to be able to get valuation, etc.
As far as photography, is there any kind of standard procedure as to
how many photo angles I might want to shoot --and in what format --for each piece in the collection. Is there maybe a software app. that might be good for plugging in the info and photos to reference each model in an organized way..(all-Mac computers as far as that goes...).
I'll be interested to look through the forums here esp. relating to the Corgi and MBox stuff of mine -- though my dad did pick up a fair amount of original-vintage Dinkys and other early 1:43 and 1:64 models.
The majority of his though, were the 1/25 coaster/friction promos... and i wonder too if anyone here can suggest a forum that focuses on that scale and genre.
As I say, a lot of questions and would greatly appreciate any feedback from you all!
Thanks!
Mike

Hello Mike, welcome to you. I would say look around the forum first, try to see in which field some members are specialized, and send them a message what your wishes are.

NewbieWelcome from Elgin, IL. Another one to help balance the scales! You will find some good people on here, and they are knowledgable as well. Search on the web for Promotional Cars, and Plastic Car kits. There are collector clubs formed especially for Promotional plastic autos. It is a very active hobby.

Mike - Welcome to the Forum, I started out just cataloging my collection and it sort of grew - both in terms of a project, and a catalogue, and a collection - I made a website, link in the sig below. You'll notice that there are 12 pictures of each toy and always the same 12 angles. This is just my idea but was born out of frustration that when you saw a photo of a car on the net it was always from a front 3/4 view, you never got to see all the detail. By doing this as a minimum you see the car from every angle. Where there are special details and features I take a few extra pictures.
