gidday, I'm Richard KGidday, I'm Richard K
Been wandering the internet since 1998 when I joined a radically different type of fanbase that has, since a year ago, no longer hold any interest for me.
From the two strangely incompatible hobbies Ihad, I have now reduced it to only one that has held my interest since I was as child: Cars.
Officially I began collecting in earnest when I was approx 13 or 14yo. Before that I was gleefully building kitset cars and blowing them up. Any diecast cars I collected before becoming a more serious collector really comes down to one that was given to me on my 5th birthday: a Solido Berliet Airport Fire-Pumper truck.
The Berliet in the background has survived many of my more turbulent years compared to the more newer, cleaner version that I bought on eBay last year. Not to replace, but to compare and to tell a story.
As I was slowly growing out of my frustrating teenage years I began collection the scale 1/18 Bburago models with my saved up pocket money. At least, some of my favorites. However, I initially wanted only to collect VW Beetles and Porsche, but in the late 1980s it was near impossible to find either in that scale.
My favorite Porsche is the 1974 Targa in bright yellow and lotsa chrome. As Bburago did not deliver I decided to create one myself, Bought a plastic kit, and a metal Bburago kit. Sawed off the roof from the Bburago Porsche and applied the panoramic rear window and b-pillar to the model. Also added a couple of other details like a whale-tail and mirrors.
What I like most about this model... everything opens!
One final touch I gave to this model was the more realistic looking exhaust manifold from the plastic kit.

ta mateThanks for the welcome.
I'll try to behave...
Apart from Bburago I also collect Matchbox/Lesney/Moko, Majorette, Siku, Corgi, Yatming, Tomica, Matchbox-Mattell, occasionally a Hotwheels car (Standard Batmobile), Lesney Major Pack, Kingsize, Superkings, Speedkings, etc
Most of the old cars are extremely playworn to near mint. I am sometimes lucky to win models that are worth a lot more, are rare or htf and get them for $9 total (even though they're worth over $300).
I'll post some examples soon.
And then there are the famous Matchbox factory faults. Picked one up last week... I'll post some pics soon. The guy who sold it to me wants it back... yeah right... ;)
see ya

NewbieWelcome to the forum from the U.S. Yes, we are a childish bunch (still playing with toys) and it is a comfort to also welcome an equally childish person to our group. There is plenty of bantering, picking up some good collecting tips, and some very fine restorations. Look through the various posts and you will see completely hopeless cases brought back to respectability. From what we have been reading about the forest fires in Australia, many fire departments can use your model fire trucks!!

Well, its fortunate I live across the ditch in New Zealand.
But anyhoo, nobleco is a buddy of mine and introduced me to this board. He told me there was much I could learn here especially with proper restoration techniques that, I am sad to say, a complete novice.
At some point I'd like to learn how to use my airbrush set that lies still unopened in my work area. Currently prefer the Tamiya spraycans.
I've also been burned by some collectors over the past few years who somehow feel that what we do is sacrilege to repaint and restore a factory painted model. But then, I really don't see the point why I should fork out 10 Grand on a #46 Morris Minor, if for a couple of bucks I can repaint a green one in light brown just as well. Am I a purists nightmare???

NewbieAbout restoring and returning models to original and then receiving recrimination for it; certainly not. On here we embrace anyone who does restorations and save them from the scrap heap. If a model is in good condition even with a few nicks, yes I agree leave it alone, but if the item appears to have been in World War II, then by all means redo it. BTW, take pictures of the before so we can see what it looked like when you acquired it. That way even you can also keep a gallery of your restores. Even picture your mistakes. That way we can learn from your mistakes also.

Junkman, nothing to do with diecast indeed, but I think a lot of subjects in here are allowed, and if I may say so, sketches of cars are related to modelling in general. Don't the 'real' guys in the factories make sketches first before making the real thing?
Mister C's question about where to find my sketch thread, I cannot answer to that, so I hope Gaz can explain things.

Keesie - that wasn't an insult to you. I just answered Mr C's question as to where to find your sketches - I stated nothing to do with diecast because I thought that was where you posted them.
|
alice

Keesie if you want something explaining you can ask me, as Gaz said he has not got the time to be on here at the min as he is quite busy with his van and his mother who has just had to change homes again, so his days are full at the minute.
|
MISTER C

Hey Alice, when Gaza is busy in the garage on his "Barbie" van and you go in to see him does he "shoe" you away or do you just get the boot ????
|
alice

Your on top form today Mister C. To tell the truth he loves to see me as it is a complete shock that i actually go into his Garage.
|
keesie25
|
Junkman, you are not to blame for anything. I did not mean it as a sort of me being offended, but merely as a sort of explain, that sketching cars is a thing all car-factories use.
|
keesie25
|
Thanks for that explain Alice, I now know who to adress with a question.
As you read Mister C asked me what happened to the thread of my sketches. I hope you can explain it to him.
|
alice
|
If he wants an explanation i will give it to him, and if you want people to know why they were taken off i will tell them.
|
keesie25
|
Thanks again for that. I hope you won't mind, that I will not tell, because I could not tell it the right way.
|
alice
|
So do you want me to say why or not as i did not understand your reply.
|
keesie25
|
Well, Mister C asked the question, so I hope you can answer that. But I can't speak for him, right?
|
alice
|
Ok first Mister C knows why they were removed as he was a mod at the time and when he was talking to Gaz, Gaz did mention it to him so really he knows why they are not there.
If you want any more said i will say.

heya keesie, had requests in the 1990s for all sorts of cars, but for some reason my interests took a different turn.

Thanks Richard, what is 'doodle'?
|
scotty
|
Have you got any more sketches Richard as the ones you have shown so far are the best i have seen in a long time
|
RVREVO
|
Hi Keesie, a 'doodle' is a quick sketch done with pen. Most artists tend to practice a little first with examples and experiments before making or drawing the initial art piece.
Hiya Scotty, can find most of my posters here:
http://s306.photobucket.com/album.../My%20Car%20Art%20file/?start=all
Kinda have some weird ones too. Like this monster.
[img] [/img]
Or this classic favorite, a VW Beetle
[img] [/img]
|
keesie25
|
Thanks again, I like that monster! I did a lot of those as well, but did you disign it yourself?
|
scotty
|
Beetle look grate and now i will have a look at your others
|
scotty
|
Some nice sketches there i think this one would be a good code 3
And even something for the truck fans.
|
RVREVO
|
Got the 'monster' racer in a book. Apparently it has 6 wheels like the Tyrell F1 and two Rover V8 engines side by side - like you see with the twin cowls. Also the gearbox and drive gave the car some trouble, as the story goes, it broke down on the way to the testing station.
Trucks: actually only one truck at the moment. At the time the Renault AE500 Magnum was my favorite supertruck. Also it came on the market at the same time as the tiny Twingo. I was hoping for a photo with the two together, but didn't find anything.
So did the next best thing. Measured it to scale. The light horizon was different for both vehicles, so had to think that through as well.
Might say I used a bit of technical drawing to make this one.
Here's the other one.
This sketch of the Ford Falcon Cobra is of a car that does not exist.
So its concept-art.

You are very talented with the sketches and should be very proud of them

If not they should be as they are excellent
|
keesie25
|
Richard, you should paint those professionally.
|
RVREVO
|
not much of a painter. And that's a different skill again.
the white pencil I use costs approx 3 dollars which is quite expensive. Its water soluble, so if I want to smudge or spread it into shadow I can my making it damp. So in effect the Faber-Castell pencils are almost like paint. Just easier to hold and don't need to wait so long. The other advantage is if I make a mistake I can always rub it out.
As for doing this professionally. Been there, done that. Made and sold 3 posters... Made a loss on all three.
The Rolls-Royce Ute was made on commission but the deal fell through when the client needed to pay for the art work.
I kept the poster, but I didn't want to make and sell anymore.
Then I had a brainstorm of wanting to make a calender. Began with the ADO16. I also wanted to do the more popular ADO15, but again other interests took over.
Last concept-art I designed was for a short story-script I was writing. This is my Mitsubishi Evo X(ena)
That was the last one.

ok... I'll bite. just gotta have a stake at it. There was a wager going on between Xena vs Buffy. The trick was which of the two would come out on top... so-to-speak.
Back when Xena was on, I rarely watched Buffy... just didn't see the point. I did, however, like both sidekicks... Willow (the witch) and Gabrielle (Bard of Potedeia)...
Anyhoo... ran out of things to watch that I found fun so bought all the DVD series of BTFS and watched all 7 Seasons in two weeks. Straight after that watched all 5Seasons of the spinoff called Angel. It had some interesting crossover episodes.
And if you still hadn't had enough of Joss Whedon's imagination just had to get his series Firefly and the movie Serenity.
But now the creators of Xena and Hercules are making a new show called 'The Legend of the Seeker'.
