Furniture Resto - Can Caustic Soda damage brass?Hi all,
I am currently working on a Victorian Chest Of Drawers for the shop (pics below).
When I got my hands on it, it hand been completely over-painted.....twice....including the original handles!
I have stripped back the main carcass, with the help of my good friend Nitromors, and am in the process of removing the handles which are brass.
My plan is to give them the Caustic Soda treatment to remove the paint from these.
I just want to check to see if Caustic Soda will have any sort of adverse effect on the brass before i go dunking!
Also, this will be my first experience with Caustic Soda....any hints!??
Any help would be greatly appreciatted.
Regards,
Rob

It would be worth trying a piece of scrap brass first - also if they are plated or finished in any way it will be risky.

The handles are off, and I am not 100% sure if they are brass or brass plated.
I have given them a little 'tickle' with Nitromors as shown below.
As I have no spare brass, I feel i might be a bit safer with Nitromors and a toothbrush, unless anyone has tried this and can advise if Caustic will be OK.

I would use Nitromors on the brass and then take the pieces to a cobblers shop. They have a buffer and may well polish them for you using saddle soap. I had a walking stick done by my friendly cobbler and it looked lovely. sorry I dont have a picture as it was sold a long time ago.

Mix some caustic and try a little bit on the rear of the handles
