Books

Can anyone suggest good car books covering British Cars only from the 50s to the 80s i.e to complement my Vanguards collection. Ideally lots of pictures and some descriptive text.  I have the old Olyslager British Cars of the late 50s which I cherish. I think there was also one covering the 60s and one for the 70s but they are not that common, and never seen down here.

Have you tried Amazon ???

Or even Ebay:

The old Olyslager books can be found but some sellers want good prices for them, but have been long out of print, but in that series they also did ones for the early 50's, and early and late 60's, just on British cars.

They didn't however get round to doing any for the 1970's which was a shame, especially as they did books for the American cars of the 50's, 60's and 70's.

I think there's plenty of books on the subject from what I've seen!

Stuart, try and find a copy of "Cars" by Martin Buckley and Chris Rees. It was published by Aness Publishing in 2002.

It is a thick paperback with over 500 pages in full colour, and it's ISBN number is:
1-84309-266-2.
It is a veritable encyclopedia of cars and shows all the Vanguard models and many more besides.

Hope this helps.

I go for the 'Observers' books one book a year from mid 50s to the mid 80s - the early ones are better as they are more complete They are not that cheap - but are worth it if you are trying to pin down a model year. Actually from mid seventies onwards they decline a bit but if you are looking for a 56 Borgward they are the books for you.

I know there are plenty of titles on Ebay and Amazon, but in a lot of cases there are no descriptions or reviews in which case I would be buying blind. I was really after information from those who may have books in their collection that know what the content is like. Sandie I will check out "Cars" and also look out for the Observers, Andrew.

Stuart - Michael E.D Allan wrote a couple of good books on British saloon cars of the 1950's and one on the early 1960's cars, try googling them, also on Amazon.  Both very good as I got them from the library.

Yes of course, I forgot about Micheal Allens wonderful book.

I have my own copy, it's full title is:

"British Family Cars of the Fifties"    Published by Guild Publishing.

Classic & Sportscar released three books about 15 years ago called A-Z of Cars (sold in the UK) - 1945-70, the '70s & the '80s.

Every car has a black & white picture, production numbers & a short discription - well worth hunting out.

I agree that these are handy reference works (I don't have the 80s, but presumably it is the same format).  So useful that they live on my desk rather than the book shelf!  Only one small black and white picture of each car, but nowadays the Internet often comes in handy to supply extra pictures.
Andrew

Actually I get all I need for my website these days from Wikipedia - there's an article on there about every car ever made

I know that you can find almost any pics you want on the internet, but there is something really satisfying about owning the books containing those mostly original photos.

I equate it with owning a vinyl album as opposed to a mass of downloaded music tracks! Nothing is tangible with downloads, can't beat having words (and music) in "hard copy" physical formats....e.g. books and records.
