banks....

Two contrary messages in two days.....
Yesterday I read that if someone has got a speeding ticket, which is not paid after a while, the gouvernment is the only 'institute', that is allowed to take the money from the savings of that person, without the owner's agreement or signature.

Today the news is that a Duch bank is 'collapsing', due to a lot of savers take their money out, being not satisfied with the bank's policy.

Now both messages are not really related, but still, it made me think.

Keep your fortune in an old sock, under your mattress !!  It's probably safer there.

You are both mistaken....I am not with that bank, and always wore long socks......but just imagine if you only have one or more accounts at that bank, and you will have to buy something, let's say a loaf of bread....to find your account is blocked.

A lot of older people I know do not trust banks, nor do they even have a bank account.

Personally, I could not manage now without my current account, it is just too useful for paying regular household bills etc.

Online banking also helps me to keep a close eye on my finances and to make sure that I do not go overdrawn.....even though my bank keeps raising the offer of my overdraft limit!!!!!   I do not intend to ever take up that offer.......

So, hereby the front page of the Telegraph, biggest Dutch newspaper. It more or less says the DSB bank has 2000 workers, and the main director loaned 73 milion euros from his own bank, for......his hobbies. (I somehow don't think that is diecast). They were late with delivering the overall year-paperwork to the taxes. Customers can no longer reach their accounts via the net, and actually came to the bank building, to see what could be done and protest. Other banks might propose to take over the banks customers. This DSB-bank is also the sponsor of AZ, the Dutch soccerclub who won last years competition, and owner of the stadium, which was built a few years ago, as well as the sonsor of the national ice scating team.
